Quake GBA Tech Demo – The "Impossible" Full 3D Port by Randy Linden, Preserved on Cartridge

Randy Linden is the developer who ported Doom to the Super Nintendo — a feat id Software themselves called impossible. In 2002, he turned his attention to the Game Boy Advance and began building something even more audacious: a full port of Quake. Not a simplified version, not a raycasting approximation — actual full 3D rendering on GBA hardware, with 3D enemies, animations, point lighting effects, underwater sections, and smooth camera movement that puts virtually every other 3D GBA game to shame.

The engine was discovered on a 256M flash card in Linden's personal storage and preserved with his full cooperation. This 2002 prototype contains three explorable maps with debug features intact: hold R on boot to jump to the second map, hold left on the D-pad for the third. Enemies are passive until provoked. The demo uses placeholder public-domain tracker music (.S3M format) by Karsten Koch and Romeo Knight rather than the Quake soundtrack, as Linden hadn't yet approached id Software about asset licensing when the build was made — though a version with actual Quake assets is believed to exist.

The engine was eventually repurposed into Linden's own commercial game, Cyboid. The GBA Quake port itself was never finished or released — until now, in the only physical form it has ever taken.

  • ⚠️ Note: Tech demo only — 3 maps, passive enemies until attacked, no Quake assets. Not a full game.
