Balatro took the gaming world by surprise in 2024 — a roguelike deckbuilder that reinvents poker with jokers, planet cards and an addictive scoring loop that's near impossible to put down. In early 2026, something equally surprising appeared: a playable fan port bringing that same core gameplay loop to real Game Boy Advance hardware, running on a 16MHz ARM7 chip and a 240×160 screen.

This is no small feat. Recreating Balatro's Lua-based engine on the GBA's 256KB of RAM meant rewriting the entire game logic from scratch in C and ARM assembly, optimising aggressively for hardware that was never built for this kind of game, and solving for the GBA's 15-bit colour limitations. The result is an independent, fan-made recreation — not an official product, not commissioned or authorised by the original creators, but a genuine community labour of love that captures the heart of Balatro's addictive core loop on a 20-year-old handheld.
